Apart from the obvious greenish tinge to the head, the dark markings to the white undertail coverts and the fairly extensive black bill tip are all inconsistent with a pure Ferruginous Duck, although the bird's size and structure are perfect.

This second calendar year male was present from May 4th to 6th and then visited both Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire before returning to Grimley for another 3 day stay from June 15th - 17th.
