2008 Summary

Whilst lacking the spectacular sightings of 2007, 2008 was a good solid year with 155 species recorded. Highlights includes the reserve’s second Shorelark sighting, its third Grey Phalarope, its fifth Red-crested Pochard and Crossbill sightings, sixth (and most prolonged) Waxwing occurrence, ninth Smew and potentially its second Honey Buzzard. 2008 was the most productive year on record for Red Kite (5 sightings), Little Gull (at least 15 birds), Raven and Mealy Redpoll (at least 9 birds involved with a continual presence from early February to mid April). However, above all it was the breeding success of the reserve for which 2008 will be most remembered – 3 pairs of Avocet raised 10 young, 1 pair of Redshank fledged all 4 young, 1 Oystercatcher and 2 Lapwing chicks were raised, at least 15 pairs of Black-headed Gulls nested, Coot, Mallard, Moorhen and Canada Geese all had bumper years, Tufted Duck had their most successful year ever with at least 62 young hatched, 3 Great Crested Grebe chicks fledged whilst several young Little Grebes were seen and most surprisingly, a Gadwall raised a brood at the Flashes, only the reserve’s second breeding record.
