News in brief - September 7th 2008

Seabirds continued to be headline features with a Fulmar in Staffordshire and a Great Skua in Warwickshire while in the same county the Grey Phalarope continued to entertain the crowds as did another in Oxfordshire but the two Staffordshire individuals appear to have moved on. Another Common Scoter arrived while terns were down in numbers compared with yesterday but there were still many new arrivals of Black and Arctic Terns while the White-winged Black Tern remains. Little Gulls also featured with a flock of ten noted in Staffordshire and the same county also hosted three Scaup, a Knot and the long staying Great Northern Diver while the Black-necked Grebe tally has risen to four.

The Great White Egret continues it’s stay in Shropshire and Wheatears were on the move, particularly in Worcestershire where no fewer than 30 individuals were seen. Just outside the region, a couple of scarce raptors were noted with a Montagu’s Harrier in Derbyshire and a Honey Buzzard in Nottinghamshire.

This summary represents a brief overview of some of the highlights for 7/9/08.
